As for grocery stores, if you mean bulk supplies (and not just Coles/Woolworths, etc), then there's a place on Stafford Road called Campbells Cash and Carry. Their prices are ok for bulk food items like jumbo containers of spices, sauces, etc... but not that much better than Coles for things like soft drinks from memory.

Just up the road from there you'll find Jack Purcell's Meats. They're great for bulk buys, like full sides of lamb, rumps, etc. Some items are priced similar to your grocery chain stores, but the quality I find is always there.

Closer to where you're at, Patton's Big Gun has some great butcher deals, and seafood too (haven't tried the seafood). I scored a full uncut t-bone for $5.99/kg last month, and they cut it to 1.5inch thick steaks for me for free. Sure, wasn't the most tender t-bone, but because I cooked it properly it turned out great.

Bulk seafoods you'll find good deals at Gambaros, 15-17 Hope St, South Brisbane. Ph: 3844 2247. Well, sometimes they've got good deals. Seasonal pricing, but again good quality.

Sorry they're not Capalaba/Victoria Point, but even when I lived on the South side I'd make the trip, it was worth it imho.

Hope this helps!

Thanks i checked out the sites and they look fantastic!!

Do you need to buy by the case at campbells? or the choice between per item or per case?

I cant wait to check these places out on monday!! thank you soo much!!

We need to live on the cheap for a lil while so all the cheap wholesale priced places will be our BEST friends atm

No problem!

At Campbells you don't have to buy by the case, but you'll get better price breaks if you do on some items. The good thing about Campbells I find is that they have bulk caterers packs, like 5 litre tomato sauce and chilli sauce bottles, massive containers of garlic, stuff like that. That's where you get the real savings.

Just one thing with Campbells, you need to be a "Business" before you can get a card. I think they're pretty lax at policing it, but if you've got an ABN floating around just take the business cert with you. Check their site though if you're not sure or give them a call.

Welcome to Brissy !!!!
I often go to http://thegroceryclub.com.au/. The items there are often heavily discounted as they're discontinued lines etc.

However if you're really looking for somewhere regular to buy items ALWAYS at a cheap price head to the asian stores. Sunnybank has a glut of them. There are a lot dispersed around Brisbane so there might be one nearer to you but in the meantime perhaps head to sunnybank. Someone may be able to suggest a closer place. There's a set of shops at the South-East corner of the intersection of Padstow and Mains Rd (Big intersection). Quite a few restaurants but lot of little asian grocery shops tucked away in there as well.
Also great to stop into one of the little eateries and get a nice cheap tasty feed!!

Fruit veges especially are a third to a quarter of the price in asian districts.

I get a bit of stuff from the Vietnamese grocers in Darra (prob a bit too far from where you are) But but for perspective....when I'm getting a 4 litre tin of Olive Oil for $17 - I think it's def worth the drive.

That first shopping trip to stock an empty pantry is a killer. All those little things like sauce, cling wrap, toothpaste, washing stuff etc really add up.

thank you!!

yeah you got that right the first one is the killer and i'm pulling my hair out as we'r living on lil money atm and i'm not sure how i'll manage a 6 week first shopping...

we thought we'd move from small old ballarat, victoria to one of the islands (renting) off redland bay ... there is one lil supermarket here which is insanely priced and we can only really afford going to the mainland once every 6 weeks with the car so we can keep ontop of bills etc... not a smart move on our behalf... but it got us to around the brisbane area (at the time we only had internet rentals to pick from and believe it or not rental prices here were within our reach i also chalk it up to young a stupid lol )... as soon as the lease is up we are going to try very hard to move to the mainland... (the locals are really non helpful and arrogant i worry all the time here... they are soo rough)

Give em a call first thing Monday and tell them your circumstances. I'd say they'll probably still let you do it, so long as you have an ABN to register it against.

Going back a few years now, but we managed to get a card for our work social club. I'm pretty sure all we needed back then was some form we filled out. Mum's got one for my brothers basketball team too, so I doubt they'll be too concerned.

I think it's got something to do with the GST they charge you at the register.... if you do give them a ring update the thread with the details, I'm a little curious now

hi

went to campbells today and pattons big gun meats - campbells shocked the crap outta me once they added the gst :O the butcher was CHEAP and well worth the money.. no look campbells was ok for the bulks but buying individuals not so good :P they took the abn without a certificate no problems!! just filling out a tiny form and wrote the abn in and she was FINE with that... also our abn was expired (how embarrassing!) BUT she said no probs... and issued us with a day pass... so that was a bonus...

THANKS guys!! we ended up getting a good chunk of stuff to fill the house with... i appreciate the replies!!!

have a good night
